Legislative Milestones

Franchising (Establishment) Bill, 2023

We kicked off the year witnessing the Senate’s passage of the Franchise (Establishment) Bill. The Franchise Bill is one of our priority bills which seeks to regulate franchising and guide the relationship between franchisors and franchisees in Nigeria.

Copyright Act, 2022

On March 17, 2023 former President Muhammadu Buhari signed the Copyright Bill into law. The Copyright Bill. The Bill provides the framework for effective administration, regulation, enforcement and protection of copyright in the Nigerian digital environment. Learn more

Arbitration and Mediation Act, 2023

On 26 May 2023, the Arbitration and Mediation Act was signed into law. The Act is a major milestone poised to cut the long wait associated with dispute resolution and boost investor confidence in the Nigerian business environment. Learn more

Data Protection Act, 2023

The Data Protection Act was signed into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari on June 12, 2023. The Act provides a legal framework for the protection of personal information. It also establishes the Nigeria Data Protection Commission for the regulation of the processing of personal information and related matters.  Learn more

Stakeholder Engagements

Launch of the Ernest Shonekan Centre

We launched the Ernest Shonekan Centre at the 29th Nigerian Economic Summit (NES 29). The Centre will build provide technical assistance, conduct research, deliver knowledge products, facilitate stakeholder engagements and champion advocacy that will drive Nigeria towards a brighter and more prosperous future for all citizens. The Centre provides a unique platform for the three initiatives (NASSBER, SABER and JUCAP).

Parley with the NILDS

On June 26, 2023, our team paid a courtesy visit to the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS). At the visit, we explored possible partnership opportunities with the Institute on legislative capacity building and research.

Strategic Alliance with the 10th Assembly

On July 6, 2023 we paid a courtesy visit to Honorable Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives.  The effort was aimed at strengthening our work with the 10th Assembly.

On July 13, 2023 we also visited Honorable Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker, House of Representatives. The delegation discussed a joint technical team with the National Assembly for an engagement framework that seeks to transform the Nigerian economy.

Meet and Greet with the Media

We participated in a ‘meet and greet’ session with high-profile media practitioners in Abuja. We leveraged the session, facilitated by the NESG, to highlight the vision of NASSBER to the press, guide storytelling and other engagements.

We positioned NASSBER and its expert network as thought leaders, using the following platforms.

Topical Podcasts

We leveraged in-house and external resources to sensitise stakeholders on priority legislation and other developments in the business environment. On the NESG Radio, we discussed unlocking subnational development, the Arbitration and Mediation Act, NASSBER’s mission and objectives, trade reforms, among others. Learn more

Engaging Blog Posts

In alignment with the objectives of the podcast, we also sensitised our audience on topical issues affecting the business environment such as legislation and policies, highlights on priority bills, etc which positioned our team as experts in the field. View articles here

 Technical Support to the 10th Assembly

We provided economic insights on request to the House of Representatives through the Office of the Speaker. This has strengthened our partnership with the Green Chamber and led to our participation at legislative events, including legislative stakeholder engagements, launch of the Legislative Agenda of the 10th Assembly, inaugural meetings for committees, and courtesy visits to relevant committees.

 Policy Commission Support

We also provided legislative insights to NESG THEC Policy commission and the Agriculture and Food Security policy commission.
