NASSBER, NILDS explore synergy on legislative capacity building

The National Assembly Business Environment Roundtable (NASSBER) is exploring a collaboration with the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) to boost the capacity of the National Assembly on a legislative framework that will improve Nigeria's business environment.

The proposed partnership seeks NASSBER’s participation in future induction ceremonies of newly elected members of the Legislature. It also proposes co-certification courses with NILDS to train legislators on the economic impact of legislation on the Nigerian economy.

To facilitate this effort, a delegation from NASSBER and its parent body, the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), paid a courtesy visit to the NILDS office in Abuja, earlier today (June 26, 2023), where both parties discussed modalities for a synergy.

The NESG was represented by Seun Ojo, Head of Public Policy Intelligence & Reform Management. She highlighted NASSBER’s interest to participate in subsequent legislative inductions, while emphasising that the Roundtable’s wealth of experience on the Nigerian business environment would be useful in the orientation of new legislators.

In the course of the engagement, Seun also pitched NASSBER’s intention to develop co-certification courses with NILDS. She said the project would, in the long run, deliver high-quality professional economic development programmes, useful for lawmakers and legislative staff.

Responding, Professor Abubakar Olanrewaju Suleiman, Director-General of NILDS and former Minister of National Planning, welcomed the proposed partnership.

He said NILDS has a track record of strategic linkages with experts in delivering on its mandate to train members of the National Assembly on best practices in legislation.

Concluding, Professor Suleiman assured NASSBER of the feasibility of the partnership. He reiterated the urgency of sensitising legislators on how their legislation impacts the economy, and also ensuring that laws are not only passed but implemented and complied with.
